The Licang District College Public Welfare School for Benefiting the Public with Skills, jointly launched by Licang District Bureau of Education and Sports and our college, officially started its classes on October 12.

The first phase will run until October 29. As a new learning platform for Licang residents, this public welfare school responds to the call for lifelong learning for all and builds a convenient learning community.

Drawing on our college’s strengths in modern service major clusters, the school selects courses from its newly developed Skill-benefiting Convenience Store curriculum series. Targeting community families, senior citizens, job seekers and entrepreneurs, the courses aim to meet residents’ demands for quality improvement, skill acquisition and better life quality. More than ten practical life skill courses are available, including flower arrangement, tea art, tea brewing, coffee making and tasting, healthy cooking, baking, Chinese pastry making, western light meals, drink mixing, image design, wine tasting, cocktail preparation, banquet etiquette and traditional Chinese-style hand painting.

The first lesson Elegant Flower Arrangement was held in the flower art training classroom. Lecturer Guo Qianzi systematically explained basic floral knowledge and flower preservation, and demonstrated free-style flower arrangement skills on site. Guided by the teacher, participants practiced hands-on and finished their own floral works step by step. Many citizen learners commented that the on-campus public welfare classes boast professional teachers and training facilities, and evening schedules make learning accessible.

Since 2018, guided by the philosophy of college-local co-construction and coordination between vocational and continuing education, our college and Licang District Bureau of Education and Sports have piloted the project Bring College Resources into Communities. In May this year, the partnership was further deepened: the Bureau set up the Co-construction Base for Citizens’ Vocational Skill Training on our campus, while our college established the Skill Training Curriculum R&D and Promotion Center at Licang Education Research and Development Center.

Evolved from Bring College Resources into Communities to this public welfare school, the partnership keeps translating high-quality university educational resources into accessible learning services for local residents. Moving forward, both sides will enrich course offerings and improve service mechanisms to help more citizens access high-quality lifelong learning resources nearby. This initiative will inject new momentum into building a learning society and implementing skill-for-people public services.
